THE PILLOWMAN
AUDITION SPECIFICS

AUDITIONS
for the First Street Playhouse production of The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday & Sunday, September 15 & 16 at 160 S. Water Street (SE corner of First & Water), Batavia, IL.

We are not taking appointments. Just pop in at 1:00, please. If you have another commitment and need to come later, please e-mail me so I'll be sure to stay and wait for you, in case things wrap up early.

Director: Craig Gustafson

HERE'S THE DRILL WHEN YOU GET TO THE AUDITIONS:
1. Fill out the audition form. Be sure to list ALL known conflicts between September 22nd and November 17th. I know emergencies happen, but if you have plans, I need to know about them before I cast you.

2. I'll have you read something from the show. No monologues and no improvs. The specific scenes will be:

Audition Scene 1: Katurian, Tupolski, Ariel
Audition Scene 2: Katurian, Michal

You can either click on the above links and read them, or Right Click the links, choose "Save target as" and download them.

We won't be reading the specific parts, but in addition to the four leads, men will be considered for the Man in the stories; women will read one of the above scenes to be considered for the Woman in the stories.

NOTE: I will be auditioning ONLY ADULTS this weekend. Children will be auditioned later.

4. Above all, relax. I'm looking for dramatic talent, comic timing and chemistry. There's no way for you to tell if I've found it, so just breathe.

5. Once you've read at least twice, you're free to leave. I really only need to see you twice, but if you feel you didn't give it your best shot the first time around, hang around and I'll read you again before we go if time permits -- I can't guarantee it.

FIRST READTHROUGH
will be Saturday, September 22 at 1:00 p.m. There will be no callbacks. I hope. The cast list will be posted here: CAST LIST by noon on Monday. If you are cast, you'll hear from me by noon on Monday. If you or your answering machine don't hear from me by noon, thank you for auditioning, but you didn't get it. But by all means get on my audition list for other shows later in the season (join here: Craig's Theater List).

IF YOU ARE NOT CAST, HERE IS THE REASON:
I'm stating this because some directors, when not casting me, have given me reasons that I regard as insane. So if you really need to know, here is the one and only reason you would not be cast in The Pillowman: I'm picking what I regard as being the best mix of people for this production. You might be the best actor in the room, but I'm looking for the best chemistry between people. It will be apparent to me when I see it; when it happens, it really does stick out like a sore thumb. So if you lose out, it will NOT be due to lack of talent, but because the chemistry isn't quite right with the other people I'm choosing. It's not your acting, your hair color, your height or anything else but the luck of the draw. So if you don't get it, please come back, because the chemistry could be right next time.
